‘Marathon King’ Poliquit dies

RAFAEL Poliquit, Jr., popularly known as the “Marathon King,” died on Thursday, fellow marathoner Mary Joy Tabal announced on Facebook. He was 30 years old.
In a Facebook post shared by Tabal, Poliquit died at the AFP General Hospital (or V. Luna General Hospital), from complications from subdural empyema in meningitis.
“You will always be in our HEARTS POL! May you rest in peace! Gone too soon!” Tabal posted. “Let’s bring this SMILE to HEAVEN Pol and continue to RUN your ETERNAL MARATHON. You will always be MY MARATHON KING, OUR MARATHON KING. YOU will be in our hearts! REST IN PEACE Master Endurance!”
Poliquit, from Tagum City, Davao del Norte, was supposed to participate in the men’s marathon in this year’s Southeast Asian Games, to be held on home soil in the Philippines. Tabal was the other marathoner qualified for the Games.
He was known for winning three Milo Marathons in 2014, 2015, and more recently last year, which earned him a spot at the SEA Games.
Poliquit’s last marathon was the Davao International Marathon held in Davao City last March 10.

Born on January 27, 1989, Poliquit served in the military with the rank of Airman 2nd Class. Besides marathon, he had also run the 10,000 meters during the Asean University Games in Laos in 2012. ARIC JOHN SY CUA
