Baguio kids learn disaster readiness tips at BFP roadshow

BAGUIO CITY – About 150 children from different schools on Thursday joined the fun learning activities of the Kiddie Fire Safety Roadshow held by the Bureau of Fire Protection at a mall here.
The event was the first activity of its kind in the Cordillera Region.
The roadshow’s activities introduced the children to the basics of fire safety and disaster preparedness.
Kids aged 7 to 12 learned evacuation drills on confined spaces, firefighting techniques, rappelling, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other safety practices through interactive activities.
The snake and ladder game that teaches disaster preparedness was especially popular among the children.
Mary Jane Hadsan, 44, said the event was a great way for kids to learn while having fun, adding that her kids insisted on joining the event.
The fire department also gave away free whistles as a part of its #PitoParaSaKaligtasan project.
Participants were taught how to use the whistle in times of disaster.
Director Leonard Bañago, BFP chief, said the expo aims to instill the importance of fire safety to the new generation.
“We want the kids to have the hands-on experience so they will retain what they learned,” he said.
BFP-CAR Director Maria Sofia Mendoza said they plan to make it an annual event.
