The Department of Health has advised the public to take precautionary measures in order to avoid heat stroke and other summer-related diseases.
The Health department issued the advisory in the wake of rising temperatures and the upcoming observance of the Holy Week.
“Prepare for the ‘Visita Iglesia’ by bringing bottled water to keep yourself hydrated, well-packed foods that do not easily spoil, and umbrella as you visit churches,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said.
Penitents who will be nailed on the cross should sterilize the nails as well as the sharp objects that they will be using during the flagellations.
“This is to avoid tetanus which can be easily contracted with the use of unsterilized or rusty nails,” said Duque.
People with high blood pressure and other diseases should take their maintenance medicines every day and if possible, stay at home, especially between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the temperature is at its peak.
“For those traveling during the Holy Week, it is best to bring first aid kits and medicines along with other necessities as a safety precaution. It is important to check the road worthiness of the vehicle, avoid speeding, and make sure seatbelts are fastened or helmets and other protective gears are properly worn,” the Health chief reminded.
“The Holy Week is a time for solemnity. We can make our religious and spiritual and other activities safe, disease-, and stress-free if we observe these reminders,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police yesterday advised parents and other people going for a vacation in beaches and resorts to be wary of possible cases of drowning, especially involving children.
PNP spokesman Police Col. Bernard Banac said that for this month alone, nine drowning incidents have been reported across the country and some of the victims were children. (Analou de Vera and Aaron Recuenco)
