Landslide win for opposition bets in Senate mock polls in UP Manila

ALL opposition candidates for senator, four of whom are running for the first time, won in the mock election conducted by the University of the Philippines (UP)-Manila Student Council and the UP Political Science Society.
Senatorial aspirant Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno topped the Pulse: The 2019 UP Manila Mock Senate Election on April 4.
The final activity report of the UP Manila organizations released on Wednesday night showed that Diokno, also the De La Salle University College of Law dean, garner 373 of the 404 ballots that were considered valid from the 2,345 votes that were cast.
Former Bayan Muna representative Neri Colmenares ranked second with 347 votes. At third spot was civic leader and lawyer Samira Gutoc with 335 votes. Fourth was former solicitor general Florin Hilbay who got 170 votes and fifth was Sen. Benigno “Bam” Aquino 4th.
UP students also elected Grace Poe who was at sixth place with 158 votes.
Former Quezon representative Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada 3rd followed with 106 votes, labor leader Leody de Guzman placed seventh with 104 votes.
Former senator Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd also got into the top 12 with 91 votes.
Completing the list were Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano with 58 votes, Sen. Nancy Binay and election lawyer Romy Macalintal, who each garnered 52 votes.
Diokno, Macalintal, Hilbay, Gutoc and de Guzman are running for the first time.
The UP report said that no statistical sampling procedure was used to determine how many respondents would be taken from each college.
Six out of seven colleges namely the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Allied Medical Professions, College of Dentistry, College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, and College of Public Health participated in the mock polls.
There are a total of 62 senatorial aspirants in the 2019 midterm elections, the highest number since the 2010 elections where 61 ran for senator.
