DENR opens portions of Manila Bay for swimming

PARTS of Manila Bay are now open for swimming, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced on Wednesday, after meeting coastal water quality standards fit for human recreation.
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu led the opening to the public of the Aguanan beach in Barangay Sisiman, Sitio Babuyan in Mt. View and Sitio Boracay in Barangay Lucanin — all in Bataan province.
The DENR said fecal coliform in these areas have reached the safe level of 100 most probable number per 100 milliliters (mpn/100 ml).
Fecal coliform bacteria, found im human and animal feces, are indicators of potential water contamination.
The DENR chief said the declaration of areas for was “the start of the blossoming of the fruits of our collective fight to win the Battle for Manila Bay.”
The effort to clean up and rehabilitate Manila Bay began on January 27 l, which includes the relocation of about 200,000 informal settlers.
