A suspect in the twin explosions in Jolo, Sulu was killed, along with the nephew of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) leader Hajan Sawadjaan in Sulu, the military said on Tuesday.
The firefight between military forces, who had air support, and about 40 Abu Sayyaf rebels under Almujer Yada took place at 3:45 p.m. at Barangay Bangkal in Patikul and lasted for 40 minutes, said Col. Gerry Besana, spokesman of the Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom).
Barak Ingog, tagged by the military as one of the perpetrators of the bombing at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral in Jolo, Sulu in January that resulted in more than 20 fatalities and injuries to about a dozen, was killed, Besana said.
Besana also said troops managed to kill Nasser Sawadjaan, the nephew of leader Hajan, believed to be the mastermind of the Jolo bombing.
Three soldiers were wounded during the firefight but there were no recorded fatalities, Besana said.
The military also seized an M16 rifle and personal belongings of the Abu Sayyaf rebels at the encounter site.
Brig. Gen. Divino Pabayo, commander of Task Force Sulu, said the operation stemmed from civilian information on the presence of Abu Sayyaf members in the area.
“They (residents) overheard that another high value ASG sub-leader is missing and probably dead, which is subject to the clearing and pursuit operations of our troops right now,” Pabayo said. DEMPSEY REYES
