VICE President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo reminded Filipinos to emulate the bravery of heroes and soldiers amid challenges currently facing the country.

In her message on the 77th anniversary of the Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) on Tuesday, Robredo said that history itself has proven how Filipinos have shown courage in defending the country at all costs.

“Sa mahabang kasaysayan nating mga Pilipino, walang oras na hindi tayo nagpakita ng ibayong kagitingan sa pagtanggol n gating bansa—laban man sa mga dayuhang mananakop o sa harap ng mga mapanga-abusong rehimen,” she said.

(In our long history as Filipinos, we have always shown that we are fearless when it comes to defending our country—whether against foreign invaders or an abusive regime.)

Robredo acknowledged the “bravery, dedication, and patriotism” of Filipino soldiers and veterans who defended the country’s democracy, and called on the public to show the same level of courage in facing various societal hurdles.

“Laban ito kontra sa gutom at kahirapan. Laban ito kontra sa abuso at katiwalian. Laban ito para sa ating demokrasya at kalayaan,” Robredo said.

(This is our fight against hunger and poverty. This is our fight against abuse and anomaly. This is our fight for democracy and freedom.)

The Vice President, who had also been advocating for the “laylayan” or the fringes of society, called on the public to acknowledge their rights and fight for their security and protection.

“Tinatawag tayong lahat na siguruhing ang bawat butil ng bigas ay napupunta sa mga tunay na nangangailangan, na ang bawat patak ng dugo at pawis ay may kapalit na ginhawa, na napapakinggan ang boses ng bawat mamamayan, lalong-lalo na ng mga ngasa laylayan, at napoprotektahan at naipapaglaban ang karapatan ng bawat Pilipino,” she said.

(We are called to ensure that every grain of rice goes to those who are truly in need, that every drop of blood and sweat has its equivalent reward, that each individual is being heard, especially those who are from the fringes of society, and that each Filipino’s right is protected and fought for.)

Lastly, Robredo called for unity and resilience in facing these battles, as shown by the country’s heroes and soldiers.

“Sa sama-sama nating pagharap sa mga labang ito, humuhugot tayo ng inspirasyon mula sa halimbawang ipinamalas ng ating mga bayani at sundalo. Hindi ito ang panahon para panghinaan ng loob o sumuko. Pagsumikapan nating tapatan ang kanilang kagitingang lumaban kahit kailanman, at hanggang sa kahulihulihan,” she said.

(As we all unite in facing these battles, we gain inspiration from our heroes and soldiers. This is not the time to be discouraged. Let us strive to reach this level of valor, to fight up until the end.)

Robredo led the commemoration of the Araw ng Kagitingan at the Mt. Samat National Shrine in Pilar, Bataan which was attended by over 4,000 people, including war veterans and their relatives.
