MAGNOLIA came up with a huge performance in Game 2 to beat Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 106-77, and forge a do-or-die showdown for a semifinal berth in Season 44 of the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup on Monday at the Araneta Coliseum.
After losing Game 1 of their best-of-three quarterfinal series (86-75), the Hotshots returned with a vengeance behind Robbie Herndon’s strong performance.
“When you are in a do-or-die situation like that, a lot of guys don’t want their season to end yet,” said the guard-forward Herndon, who scored 18 points and five rebounds. “I think we used that as a motivation that we didn’t want to go home yet.”
Ian Sangalang finished with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Jio Jalalon made 17 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals to lead the Hotshots. Mark Barroca and Paul Lee contributed 13 points apiece while Rome Dela Rosa had 11 points also for Magnolia.
The Hotshots started like a house on fire as it raced to an 11-0 start before building an insurmountable 31-point lead, 87-56, early in the last period to completely control the game.
“We only tied the series. My players were challenged last time. It is not the Magnolia Hotshots type of basketball,” said Magnolia coach Chito Victolero.
Solomon Mercado was the only Ginebra player who scored in double figures with 13 points in Game 2.
