MANILA: Two persons allegedly involved in an investment scam have been arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation after taking over P14 million from a victim.
NBI Director Dante Gierran identified the suspects as Edgardo Lacson and Abegail Lacson.
The suspects were arrested by agents of the NBI Anti-Organized and Transnational Crimes Division during an entrapment operation in a restaurant in Makati City last Tuesday.
Following their arrest, they were subjected to inquest proceedings at the Makati Prosecutor’s Office the next day for estafa charges.
Gierran said the operation was conducted based on the complaint of the victim who gave the suspects a total of P14.66 million from November to December 2016.
The NBI official cited the victim was enticed to invest by Edgardo who introduced himself as the team leader in hydrocarbon management of the Shell Co.
The suspect said he has been authorized to solicit investments from the public and promised the victim nine to 15 percent monthly interests for investments.
The victim became suspicious after the suspect has never given the payouts and even sought an additional P600,000. (Jeffrey Damicog)

Police also apprehended the 61-year-old uncle of one of the suspects when he allegedly tried to stop them from arresting his nephew who was the target of the operation.
Police identified the suspects as Reynaldo Sumbillo, alias “Mark,” 28; Raymund Cabtuando, 35; Christian del Rosario, 39; and Jonard Uy, 40.
Investigation showed that at around 10:30 p.m., the Marikina police conducted a buy-bust operation against a certain “Mark”– later identified as Sumbillo – at his house.
After a sachet of illegal drugs worth P500 was purchased from Sumbillo and his cohort Del Rosario, police quickly entered his house and placed the duo under arrest. Police also nabbed Cabtuando and Uy who were with the suspects during the sting.
Recovered from the suspects were six sachets of suspected shabu, a cellphone, P600 cash, and the marked money.
