FOUR out of 10 Filipinos do not believe that China has good intentions for the Philippines, a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey said

The SWS  from December 16 to 19, 2018 found that 44 percent of Filipinos disagreed with the statement that “most of what the Chinese government wants to happen in the Philippines is good for the Filipinos.”

Only 27 percent of the respondents agreed with the statement while the remaining 29 percent were undecided on the matter.

The results yielded a “moderately weak” rating of -17 net agreement score.

The survey also said that more Filipinos “strongly disagree” with the statement now than when it was last asked by SWS in 1993.

While more Filipinos believe that the Chinese government has good plans for the Philippines this year, at -17 from 1993’s -28, the number of those who strongly disagreed rose by 17 percentage points at 22 percent from five percent.

Those who were undecided stood at 29 percent, six percent lower from the 35 percent 25 years ago.

The net agreement scores of people from Mindanao (-19) Metro Manila (-20) and Balance Luzon (-23) are all rated “moderately weak.”

The net agreement in the Visayas was -1 for a “neutral” rating.

The survey was conducted among 1,440 Filipinos aged 18 years and above. It had sampling error margins of  2.6 percent nationwide and 5 percent for each region.

The survey was released after President Rodrigo Duterte said recently that China, one of several claimants to the disputed territories in the South China Sea, wanted to be “friends” with the Philippines.
