President Duterte is set to fire another government official next week, Malacañang confirmed yesterday.
In an interview over DZMM Teleradyo, presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said that Duterte will personally announce the next official on the chopping block next week.
Panelo, however, did not identify the official or the reason why Duterte is firing the official.
“Ia-announce niya next week,” Panelo said. “Binanggit niya rin iyon kagabi during the meeting with some businessmen, na he will be firing another official next week,” he added.
Duterte announced last week in South Cotabato that he would be firing another government official, warning that the country is doomed if the government fails to address the corruption looming within.
“I vowed to lessen the corruption but I will fire more next week. I am just waiting for their report,” Duterte said. “I told them: ‘You give me your report and if I find it justifiable, you can stay. But if there is corruption, I’m sorry,’” he added.
Duterte was catapulted to the presidency due to his promise to end corruption in government. Since winning the 2016 polls, Duterte vowed to fire officials even with just a whiff of corruption.
In 2018, the President’s crusade against corruption resulted into the sacking of at least 22 government and military officials and employees due to alleged corrupt practices, including excessive foreign trips.
Since assuming the post, Duterte has fired 151 government officials and employees for different reasons. Forty-eight government officials and employees have so far been removed this year.
The President lamented letting go of his appointees who were involved in corrupt practices, especially those who urged him to run for president, but said that it had to be done. (Argyll Geducos)
