PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte chose to eat sardines over baby back ribs with vegetables for dinner during Monday’s Cabinet meeting, an official said.
In a Facebook post, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol disclosed that Duterte refused the food prepared for the Cabinet meeting in Malacañang.
“Sardinas Ulam Ni PRRD! These photos taken by Executive Secretary (Salvador) Bingbong Medialdea show President Rody Duterte enjoying his ‘sardinas’ which was his ‘ulam’ during the Cabinet meeting,” Piñol said in his caption.
“The prepared food for members of the Cabinet was baby back ribs with vegetables and rice, which President Duterte refused. ‘Ayaw ko nyan. Bigyan nyo ako ng sardinas (I don’t like that, give me sardines),” he added, quoting the President.
Piñol then lauded Duterte for being a simple man even if he occupied the highest position in the country.
“This shows that this man who now occupies the highest position in the country has not been weaned from his humble beginnings,” he said.
Duterte, known for his simple lifestyle, said previously that he preferred simple food served at the Palace.
“Magkain kayo sa akin? Oo. Isang sabaw, wala pay laman, gulay lang ang y*** Sabaw, isang ulam, isang kanin (You want to eat at home? Ok. One soup, no meat just vegetables. One soup, one viand, one rice),” the President said.
“Maniwala kayo’t hindi. Pati ‘yung mga ambassador diyan, sabihin ko, kung kumain dito, ‘yan lang (Believe it or not, I served the same food to visiting ambassadors who want to eat here),” he added. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
