The government has received an unsolicited offer from a company to develop and run the Siargao airport, an official from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.

Manuel Tamayo, undersecretary for aviation at the DOTr, said last week that Philippine Airport Ground Support Solutions, Inc. (PAGSS) had submitted a proposal in February for the operation and maintenance (O&M) and upgrade of the regional air hub in Siargao, Surigao del Norte.

“It’s still being evaluated by the CAAP (Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines),” he said when asked for more details of the proposal. He said there was also a proposal to build a new airport in Siargao that would be “centrally located” away from terrain features.
Last year, the DOTr bared a plan to relocate the Siargao Airport or Sayak Airport to the center of northern Siargao island.

“The bigger argument for Siargao was the potential for tourism. So that if we will use the old airport, it might limit the potential of the place for tourism,” Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said in September.

Siargao was one of locations that benefited from the six-month closure of Boracay, the Department of Tourism (DOT) earlier said. DOT Caraga Region Director Ma. Ana Nuguid said in January that tourism arrivals in Siargao surged by 50.7 percent to 195,562 travellers last year.
