MANILA City Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada was a “no show” in Monday’s signing of a peace covenant for local candidates organized by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) to ensure peaceful, honest, credible and orderly elections.

Of the three most popular mayoralty candidates, only former Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim made it on time during the actual signing of the covenant at the Manila Cathedral while former Vice Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso arrived late.

Estrada was represented by lawyer Ericson Alcovendaz, his spokesman and city administrator.

City Hall’s media coordinator Bambi Purisima said that Estrada was in a caucus from 5 p.m. of Sunday to 2 a.m. on Monday that was why he failed to make it to the covenant signing at 9 a.m.

“You know you can accuse Mayor Erap of anything, such as womanizing, among others, but you can’t accuse him of election cheating and election vioilence,” he said.

Estrada beat Lim in the 2016 elections by 2,000 votes.

Lim claimed that he would have won in 2016 had the Estrada camp not tinkered with the election results.

Lim expressed confidence that this time around he would emerge victorious based on a platform of honest governance and efficient and past service, among others.

Domagoso vowed to raise the level of campaign and discourse by running a platform-based campaign, saying that at stake in the coming polls is the future of every Manileño.

“We are one with the Comelec in running a free, orderly, honest, peaceful and credible elections. We commit to run a clean, fair and honest campaign,” he added. “We will raise the level of campaign discourse in the elections.” WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
