TWO alleged members of an Islamic State (IS)-inspired group were arrested and their firearms and other paraphernalia seized during operations by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in the Cordillera region on March 28.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Oscar Albayalde on Monday said CIDG operatives in Baggao, Cagayan arrested brothers Altero and Greg Cariaga in Barangay Dabbac Grande at 5:15 a.m.
An IS flag, two revolvers, two pistols, 20 live ammunition, and other gadgets and bags were recovered during the operation.
The two were allegedly members of a Daesh-link group Syuful Khilafa Fi Luzon or Northern Jihadist Group that was established in Baggao in 2016.
Albayalde said there were no reports of hostilities carried out by the group and that its presence maybe a way of gaining the attention and support of the IS.
“Apparently, they are pledging support to the IS…Maybe they just want to be known and get support,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino.
Albayalde also said that this was the first time that an IS-inspired group was found outside Mindanao but downplayed its significance.
The brothers and the seized items were brought to Camp Adduru in Tuguegarao City for proper disposition.
They will face charges for violating Republic Act 9516 or the illegal possession of firearms and explosives and RA 10591 or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Explosives. ROY NARRA
