A video from travel blog Lonely Planet was criticized on Facebook for its description of the Banaue Rice Terraces.
The terraces, named one of the “world’s greenest places” on Lonely Planet’s Facebook page, was described to have been built by the Chinese.
“These mud-built terraces were first built around 2,000 years ago by the Chinese,” Lonely Planet wrote.
Filipino netizens were quick to deny it.
“The Banaue Rice Terraces was built by Filipino natives, particularly Igorots. China did not invade Philippines in the past nor did they built any infrastructures in our country. Until recently,” commented Clinton Balud.
“Disappointingly inaccurate on the rice terraces segment,” commented Kaye Limlingan.
“Lonely Planet, The Banaue Rice Terraces in the Philippines is NOT built by the Chinese,” tweeted Byron Villegas.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Ifugao people built the terraces over 2,000 years ago.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco) said in its website that the Ifugao Rice Terraces “are the priceless contribution of Philippine ancestors to humanity.”
“Built 2,000 years ago and passed on from generation to generation, the Ifugao Rice Terraces represent an enduring illustration of an ancient civilization that surpassed various challenges and setbacks posed by modernization,” it said.
Unesco named the Rice Terraces a Heritage Site.
