Let seniors vote in malls, Comelec urged
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) should devise measures to ensure that senior citizens would be able to cast their votes on May 13, such as assigning them the most convenient rooms in voting precincts, or even allowing them to vote inside the mall.
Senior Citizen Rep. Francisco Datol called on the Comelec to make voting more convenient for seniors by delivering the ballots to them if the precincts were on upper floors, providing them water and a first aid team on standby “if the weather is too hot,” and allowing them to vote in malls which were often air-conditioned. —Melvin Gascon
More heads to roll
President Rodrigo Duterte said more officials were on the chopping block for alleged corruption.
In a speech in Koronadal City, South Cotabato, on Tuesday, Mr. Duterte said he was just waiting for a report on which to base his decision to fire certain officials.
“Lessen the corruption, but I will fire more next week. I am just waiting for the report. I said, you give me your report and if I find it justifiable, you can stay,” the President said.
“But if there is corruption, I am sorry,” he added.
The President reportedly warned that he would fire officials over the water crisis, and upbraided the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, as well as private concessionaires, Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Co. Inc.
Although he had let go of several controversial officials, the President has been known to “recycle” fired officials by assigning them to other posts in government. —Julie M. Aurelio
