Like the men’s basketball team, golf association also intends to form its own dream team for the coming SEA Games.
Though they are still in the process of finalizing the composition of the men’s and women’s teams, National Golf Association of the Philippines secretary general Bones Floro said they will do everything they can to come up with the strongest possible teams that can vie for four golds in the biennial meet.
“While some of our athletes are in the United States pursuing their studies, NGAP will surely do everything it can to form the best possible teams in our pursuit of gold medals,” said Floro.
In last year’s Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, the women’s team completed a two-gold sweep with Yuka Saso winning the individual gold apart from anchoring the team to victory.
The other members of the team were Bianca Pagdanganan and Lois Kaye Go.
The three, together with other top amateur golfers in both men’s and women’s are being eyed for the national team in the SEA Games, as golf will be held at the Luisita Golf Club in San Miguel, Tarlac.
“Continuing from the Asian Games success, we are very confident of our chances for gold medal in the SEA Games,” said Floro.
“The preparations of the athletes have been ongoing, and once the team and the pool are established, we will be participating in numerous international events leading up to the SEA Games as part of their training,” he added.
Meanwhile, Philippine Olympic Committee president and PBA chairman Ricky Vargas said an all-pro will make up the men’s basketball to the SEA Games.
“The World Cup team will probably be tired by then and we have decided that another team will be formed,” he added.
