PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law that will regulate the practice of occupational therapy in the country.

Republic Act 11241 or the Philippine Occupational Therapy Law.creates a professional regulatory board of occupational therapy, which will be composed of a chairperson and two members appointed by the President.

The law aims to develop and nurture competent and world-class occupational therapists.

The board will promulgate, administer and enforce rules and regulations, supervise and regulate the registration, licensure and practice of occupational therapy in the Philippines and maintain a roster of occupational therapists.

It will also study and monitor conditions affecting the practice of occupational therapy, administer examinations to applicants; adopt a program for the full computerization of the licensure examination.

Those who will pass the examination will be issued a professional license and registration and will have the initials OTRP, or Occupational Therapists Registered Philippines, if they pass the examination.

The law allows foreign-licensed therapists to be given special and temporary permits upon the recommendation of integrated professional organization of occupational therapists if they are called for a consultation essential to national development.

The law is a consolidation of Senate Bill 454 and House Bill 8528, which were passed on January 29, 2018 and December 12, 2018, respectively.Ralph Edwin U. Villanueva
