ZAMBOANGA CITY – A fisherman recovered a dead dolphin at the shores of Delusom, Leon B. Postigo town in Zamboanga del Norte on Monday evening.
Police Major Helen Galvez, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 9 (PRO9) said George Escobido, 38, was about to go fishing around 6:30 p.m. on March 18 when he spotted a huge sea mammal lying on the shoreline.
When he approached the mammal, “it was already in the stage of decomposition.”
Escobido immediately reported his discovery to the LB Postigo police and the dolphin was turned over to Ricardo Mahinay of the Local Municipal Fisheries.
“Based on examination by Mahinay on the said mammal, he decided to burn the dolphin to avoid contamination to the local populace,” Galvez said.
Mahinay explained that the dead dolphin had to be burned, “because it is emitting foul smell and was decomposing, there’s no more flesh on the stomach area, we can see the ribs.”
