The tropical depression off the Pacific Ocean entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility yesterday and was named “Chedeng.”
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said Chedeng, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 60 kph, was located at 980 kilometers east of Mindanao before noon yesterday.
Should it continue to move west at 25 kph, Chedeng may make landfall over Davao Oriental between today and tomorrow. Scattered to at times widespread moderate to heavy rains may prevail over Davao Oriental and Surigao del Sur today and in other parts of Mindanao tomorrow.
PAGASA advised the concerned disaster risk reduction and management offices and residents in these areas, especially those living in areas at high risk of flooding and landslides, to undertake necessary preparations and continue monitoring official updates.
The weather disturbance will cause moderate to rough seas over the eastern seaboard of Visayas and Mindanao today and tomorrow.
Those with small sea craft were advised not to venture out into sea.
While it may make landfall over Davao Oriental, PAGASA is not discounting the possibility that Chedeng will weaken into a low pressure area before reaching the land.
The northeast monsoon or “amihan” will bring cloudy skies with light rains over Batanes, Cagayan, and Isabela.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms. Residents in these areas were warned of possible flash floods during severe thunderstorms. (Ellalyn V. Ruiz)
