THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday said motorists should prepare for heavy traffic in parts of Metro Manila as several roads would undergo repairs from 11 p.m. this Friday until Monday morning.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) identified the affected roads as the southbound lanes of C-5 and Julia Vargas Avenue intersection and C-5 and Lanuza Avenue intersection and the north and southbound lanes of C-5 road in front of SM Aura in Taguig City.
Other roads under DPWH jurisdiction that would be closed for repairs included the northbound lanes of EDSA New York Monte de Piedad (third lane from sidewalk), the northbound truck lane of Katipunan Avenue cor. CP Garcia Avenue and and the northbound lane of Fairview Avenue Atherton to Regalado Avenue North (second lane from center island).
Maynilad will also conduct restoration and concreting works along Commonwealth Avenue, corner Litex, in Batasan Hills village in Quezon City.
The MMDA advised motorists to avoid these areas and use alternate routes instead, until all affected roads will be fully passable by 5 a.m. on Monday.
Meanwhile, the agency warned bus drivers in EDSA to be disciplined or face hefty fines and losses.
MMDA Command Center chief Edison “Bong” Nebrija said through the strict implementation of the lane segregation scheme, the agency was able to speed-up traffic in several portions in EDSA.
He said gaps were seen in several portions such as from the junctions of Shaw Boulevard to Kamuning in Quezon City.
“Some areas are decongested in a moment but buses and other vehicles quickly flock. But that’s it, they (bus companies) are dispatching too many buses,” Nebrija told reporters.
MMDA data showed that more than 3,000 city buses plied through the major thoroughfare daily.
Nebrija, also the EDSA traffic chief, said the agency’s enforcers were instructed to apprehend, fine and make erring bus drivers turn back to their points of origin.
“They always abruptly switch lanes, later you would see they would already be in the inner lanes where private vehicles and other vehicles should be. That causes traffic,” he said.
He said the only buses allowed to switch lanes were provincial, point-to-point and tourist buses. NEIL JAYSON N. SERVALLOS
