Ateneo De Manila University cruised to its fifth straight win with a 25-8, 22-25, 25-16, 25-10 thrashing of Adamson University in Season 81 University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s volleyball on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Save for a shaky second set, the Lady Eagles dominated the entire game to stretch their winning streak and stay on top of the eight-team standings with a 5-1 record.

Ateneo head coach Oliver Almadro praised his wards for playing all-out despite a short rest after their win over University of the Philippines (UP) just three days ago.

“My players really prepared for this game. We only had a short break after Sunday’s game. So, we really have to work hard right away and set our goals and mindset,” said Almadro.

“I really admire my players for their sacrifices and hardwork,” he added.

Spiker Ponggay Gaston notched a UAAP career-high 16 points built on 10 spikes and six aces while hitter Kat Tolentino tallied 15 points highlighted by 10 attacks and four blocks.

But it was captain Bea De Leon who shone the brightest with her season-high 14 points after a sub-par performance in their previous outings.

“I’m most thankful to coach. He always reminds me that he needs my points. It gave me a lot of confidence that at least he and my teammates still trust me,” said De Leon.

The Lady Eagles soared to a strong start as they capitalized on the Lady Falcons’ 11 errors in the opening set.

After Adamson tied the game at 1-1, Ateneo erected an 8-2 lead on Gaston’s back-to-back aces and stretched it to 16-8 on Wong’s sneaky placing en route to a third set win.

Team skipper Eli Soyud was the lone bright spot with 13 points for the skidding Adamson.

The Lady Falcons plummeted to their second consecutive loss joining University of the East at the bottom on a similar 1-5 slate.

Earlier in the men’s side, defending champion National University grabbed its fifth straight triumph after sweeping University of the Philippines, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15.

In the other game, Ateneo also extended its roll to three wins with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-15 rout of Adamson.

The Blue Spikers solidified their grip of No. 3 with a 4-2 card while the Soaring Falcons fell to a share of No. 4 with University of Sto. Tomas on a similar 3-3 sheet.
