TWO men pretending to be Manila traffic enforcers were arrested for allegedly pulling over passing motorists and extorting money during the wee hours of Tuesday, March 12.

Investigators identified the suspects as Noel Silva, 37, and Jay-v Gantang, 36.

They were arrested along Jose Abad Santos Avenue corner Mayhaligue Street, Barangay 250, Zone 22 in Tondo, Manila at about 1:20 a.m.

They will be facing charges of usurpation of authority, a violation of Article 177 of Republic Act 3815 (Revised Penal Code), and their case will be referred to the Manila City Prosecutor’s Office for inquest proceedings, the police said.

If found guilty, the suspects may spend from two to 10 years in jail.

The arrest stemmed from a complaint of a concerned citizen, said Police officer 1 Narciso Ignacio Jr, the investigator, quoting arresting officer, P02 John Roel Morandante of the Padre Algue Police Community Precinct.

Morandante said upon verifying the tip, police apprehended the two suspects wearing the uniforms of the personnel from the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau, manning and directing traffic.

Law enforcers said they approached Gantang and Silva and were asked to identify themselves and were arrested for failing to provide identification cards.

The suspects are under the custody of the Morion Police Station. CATHERINE A. MODESTO
