Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde reassured the priests and bishops receiving death threats from unknown people that the PNP could provide them with protection.
Albayalde told reporters that he was in “constant communication” with Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle.
Albayalde, however, admitted that he has yet to directly receive a call from any threatened priest about getting protection.
“There is no one contacting me [about the threats] or probably, [they report it] through different regional directors or through Cardinal Tagle,” he said.
Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, an outspoken critic of President Rodrigo Duterte, previously confirmed to the public weeks ago that he has been receiving threatening messages.
More priests also came forward to the public and revealed that they have been receiving death threats too over the Catholic Church’s previous responses to Duterte’s statements.
The Catholic Church is one of the critics of the Duterte administration’s war on drugs campaign.
