More Filipinos use Facebook more than other social networking applications, a research agency has reported.
According to a report from the Pew Research Center on Thursday, 58 percent of Filipino adults use Facebook, followed by Instagram (10 percent), Twitter (7 percent), Viber and photo-sharing app Snapchat (both at 6 percent), messaging app WhatsApp (4 percent) and dating app Tinder (1 percent).
The median usages of social media worldwide are: Facebook (62 percent), WhatsApp (47 percent), Instagram (20 percent), Twitter (10 percent), Snapchat (6 percent), Viber (4 percent) and Tinder (2 percent).
Pew Research said the survey was based on how adults use the platforms.
“Respondents were asked about their use of seven different social media platforms and messaging apps,” it said.
“These platforms were chosen based on three criteria: high usage rates, input from local survey organizations and to capture a range of different types of sites with distinctive features,” Pew Research said.
WhatsApp and Instagram are part of Facebook.
Pew Research Center also reported that Facebook is popular among young Filipino adults.
The report showed that 88 percent of Filipinos aged 18 to 29 use Facebook, compared to 57 percent for ages 30 to 49 and 21 percent for adults above 50.
Facebook as a sole social media platform is used by 99 percent of Filipinos.
Of those who use only one platform for social media, almost every Filipino uses Facebook for their social media use, at a rate of 99 percent, followed by Vietnam (98 percent), Tunisia (93 percent), Venezuela (84 percent) and Kenya (65 percent).
Meanwhile, 96 percent of people in Lebanon use WhatsApp as their sole social media platform, followed by India (76 percent) and South Africa (77 percent).
“Younger and more educated people are more likely to go online,” Pew Research said.
It added that young Filipinos were more likely to use the Internet.
A graphic showed that 91 percent of Filipinos between ages 18 and 29 are likely to go online, compared to 65 percent for ages 30 and 49 and 30 percent for those above the age of 50.
The Pew Research survey was conducted among adults from 11 countries, including the Philippines.
The survey found that the vast majority of adults in these countries have access to a mobile phone of some kind, with 53 percent using a smartphone capable of accessing the internet and running apps.
Most of these people said they personally benefit from the technology: More than 9 in 10 say the devices have helped them stay in touch with loved ones, and nearly 8 in 10 said they use them to get news and information about important issues.
But when asked if mobile phones and social media have been good for society, the responses were mixed, with many expressing concerns about the impact of digital technologies on children.
Some 79 percent of adults surveyed said people should be very concerned about children being exposed to harmful or immoral content, and nearly two-thirds said mobile phones have had a bad influence on children in their country.
“The rapid advancement of the mobile-social package invites people to think about the role of these devices in their lives and to look around and see how they might be affecting their societies,” said Lee Rainie, Pew’s director of internet and technology research.
