COLUMBIAN Dyip kept its playoff bid alive as it defeated Rain or Shine, 85-82, in Season 44 of the Philippine Basketball Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday..
Rashawn McCarthy piled 22 points for Columbian Dyip, which bounced back from a loss to Blackwater to improve to 4-5 and keep its No. 8 spot.
“After losing to Blackwater, I told them that’s enough because we need three wins. So we take it one game at a time. We were just lucky to win. After a bad start, I told the boys to regroup in the second quarter. The players responded very well,” said Columbian Dyip coach John Cardel.
From a slim 42-40 halftime advantage, McCarthy and Jackson Corpuz provided the Columbian Dyip the spark in the third period to establish their biggest advantage, 55-46.
Rain or Shine tied the count at 73-all and managed to keep the game close at 82-83 behind Gabe Norwood’s three-point bomb with only 2:06 remaining.
But that was the last time the Elasto Painters would put up a fight as the Dyip’s pressing defense held them scoreless.
Reden Celda nailed two free throws for the Dyip with only 2.3 ticks left.
James Yap missed what could have been his game-tying triple at the final buzzer.
Corpuz racked up 12 points and eight rebounds, while rookies CJ Perez and JP Calvo provided productive performances.
Perez, the top overall pick, had a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds plus two steals, while Calvo added eight points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Mark Borboran scored 21 points in a losing effort for Rain or Shine, which now carries a 7-3 win-loss record.
