UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) strikingly bounced back with a shocking sweep of three-time defending champion De La Salle University, 25-20, 25-22, 25-17, in Season 81 University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
The Golden Tigresses bucked the absence of the injured Milena Alessandrini en route to rebounding from a 25-19, 20-25, 19-25, 25-27 loss to Far Eastern University (FEU) last Saturday.
Sophomore spiker Alessandrini, the last season’s Rookie of the Year, suffered a partial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear on her left knee in UST’s defeat to FEU.
With the stunning victory, the España-based volleybelles improved to three victories against two defeats.
UST, La Salle and FEU are now knotted at No. 3 with identical 3-2 records, leaving Ateneo De Manila University and University of the Philippines (UP) atop the standings with similar 3-1 slates.
It was the second straight setback for the four-peat seeking Lady Spikers, who absorbed a stinging 25-21, 20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 12-15 loss to UP four days ago.
