On Monday, February 25, the people of Burnaby South elected NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh to represent them in Ottawa, affirming his position as leader of the federal NDP party.
He will be the first person of colour to lead a federal party in the House of Commons.
“We made history today,” he said at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown after the results were announced. “I want to promise you something. I will be your champion. I will take each and every one of you to Ottawa where I will fight for you in the House of Commons,” he said to roaring cheers.
Singh, who was raised in Windsor, Ontario, by immigrant parents, earned 39 per cent of the vote.

His Liberal opponent Richard Lee, who received 26 per cent of vote, congratulated Singh in his concession speech.
“We are very fortunate to live in a democratic society in Canada,” Lee said. “Congratulations to Mr. Singh. He has the opportunity to serve the best community in Canada.”
Lee also reminded Singh that another election is just around the corner. Lee said he plans to run against the NDP leader again.
