After more than 60 hours of traveling by train all the way from Pyongyang through China, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un arrived in Vietnam on Tuesday for a summit with US President Donald Trump.
Clad in a black Mao-style suit, Kim walked out of the Dong Dang station in Lang Son province, waving to a group of people who greeted him.
Kim soon headed to the capital city of Hanoi in a black Mercedes limousine. The 170-kilometer drive is expected to take a few hours.
Kim is scheduled to hold a summit with Trump on Wednesday and Thursday.
A group of North Korean officials, including the top nuclear envoy, Kim Hyok-chol, and Kim Chang-son, known as the de facto chief of staff to the leader, also welcomed him at the train station. The officials led dayslong working-level pre-summit talks with the United States in Hanoi on agenda, security, protocol and other logistical issues.
Kim’s armored train pulled into the station at around 8:10 a.m., having left the North Korean capital at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday and passed through China.
Trump is scheduled to land at the Hanoi international airport Tuesday night, flying from Washington.
The leaders plan to have an initial private dinner meeting Wednesday evening followed by a “social dinner,” according to the White House. They will have follow-up talks the next day.
It will be their first talks in eight months after the one-day negotiations in Singapore.
