IF the elections were held today, incumbent local chief executives in southern Metro Manila would win another term as a survey showed most voters preferred re-electionists and members of their family in the coming May 13 midterm elections.

Incumbent Makati City Mayor Mar-Len Abigail “Abby” Binay leads her brother, former Makati mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay Jr., with 70 percent of the residents going her way.

Binay Jr., whose challenge to his sister divided the Binays and resulted into a proxy war by officials in the city government, has 20 percent of the votes.

The non-commissioned survey by the RP Mission and Development Foundation Inc. (RPMDInc.) was conducted from Feb. 1 to 10 and covered 2,500 respondents in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Incumbent Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez posted 43 percent against former Parañaque mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. who got 15 percent. Both have become administration bets as Olivarez left the Liberal Party for President Rodrigo Duterte’s PDP-Laban before the filing of candidacy last October.

Bernabe, who served for three consecutive terms starting in 2004, is the standard bearer of the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), which President Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte formed.

Imelda Aguilar of Las Pinas City and Miguel Ponce 3rd of Pateros Municipality, incumbents running unopposed, got 68 and 55 percent, respectively.

Another incumbent Jaime Fresnedi of Muntinlupa City, who is leading a slate of unlikely allies from PDP-Laban and the Liberal Party, is ahead in the mayoralty race with 65 percent followed by former Immigration deputy commissioner Red Marc Mariñas with 12 percent.

The survey also showed a big gap in the Taguig mayoralty race where bets representing the Cayetano clan and PDP-Laban would slug it out for the post.

Former Taguig 2nd District Rep. Lino Cayetano, brother-in law of incumbent Mayor Lani Cayetano got 75 percent against incumbent Taguig-Pateros District Rep. Arnel Cerafica, PDP-Laban bet, who got 17 percent.

In Pasay, where mayoralty bets have strong anti-drug agendas, Pasay City Rep. Imelda Calixto-Rubiano, sister of incumbent mayor Antonino Calixto, leads with 53 percent, followed by Cesar “Chet” Cuneta, brother of actress Sharon Cuneta, who got 16 percent.

The survey, which has a 2 percent margin of error, asked respondents whom they would vote for if the elections were held today.

Dr. Paul Martinez of RPMDInc said the firm would also conduct a series of independent surveys in the NCR for the May elections.
