LEVELS of fecal coliform bacteria have gone down in parts of Manila Bay, following a series of clean-up activities and a crackdown on establishments found to be violating environmental laws, an official of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said on Friday.

In an interview, DENR Undersecretary Benny Antiporda told The Manila Times that water in Manila Bay was now cleaner, particularly along the US Embassy and nearby areas along Roxas Boulevard.

Latest data from DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) showed that bacteria levels taken from the US Embassy area have gone down from 1.2 million most probable number or mpn per 100 milliliters(ml) to 1,700 mpn/100 ml, from February 11 to 15.

This is the lowest count out of the eight water quality monitoring stations of the DENR.
