La Salle takes down Ateneo to open ‘4-peat’ bid in UAAP women’s volleyball

DE LA SALLE University fired off its four-peat bid with a convincing 25-14, 25-17, 16-25, 25-19 victory over archrival Ateneo De Manila University in Season 81 University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Lady Spikers leaned on a balanced attack to open their title-retention campaign on a win.
“All of the situations went to our favor that’s why we won,” said La Salle head coach Ramil De Jesus.
Veteran hitter Desiree Cheng paced the reigning champion’s offense with 13 points built on eight attacks, two blocks and three aces to go with 14 excellent receptions and nine excellent digs.
Seasoned spiker May Luna and rookie hitter Jolina Dela Cruz tallied 11 markers apiece while Aduke Ogunsanya chipped in 10 points.
Sophomore setter Michelle Cobb accounted for 29 of La Salle’s 30 excellent sets.
Third-year opposite hitter Kat Tolentino was the lone double-digit scorer for the Lady Eagles with a game-high 16 points. JEREMIAH M. SEVILLA
