FOR the second time in four months, President Rodrigo Duterte went to Hong Kong unannounced over the weekend for “rest and recreation.”
Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo confirmed this on Saturday night, saying it is the birthday of Duterte’s common-law wife, Honeylet Avancena, on Saturday.
“Yes, he is in [Hong Kong] with Honeylet. It’s the latter’s birthday today,” Panelo said in a statement.
The statement of former Special Assistant to the President Christopher Go, however, did not mention Avancena’s birthday.
Go said that the trip was personal and that it was daughter, Kitty, who requested it “as a gift.”
“They have done this even before, when Duterte is still a Davao City. The weekend getaway is for rest and recreation,” Go said.
Go added that Duterte appointed Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea as the officer-in-charge of the country during Duterte’s days off.
Go said that Duterte left for Hong Kong on Friday night and was expected to arrive on Sunday.
No other details were given.
In October, Duterte went on an unscheduled trip to Hong Kong with his family, three days after disclosing he had a medical examination.
He quelled speculations that he underwent medical check-up but shopped for clothes.
Duterte’s visit to Hong Kong came weeks after former senator Francisco Tatad claimed Duterte underwent a kidney transplant, which was strongly denied by the President.
The President even threatened to slap Tatad and went as far as challenging his virility.
