For the first time in his young career, Ifugao bantamweight prospect Carl Jammes Martin finally got to face a world class fighter, albeit, in a sparring session.
During his 10-round session last weekend at the Survival Camp in Magallanes Cavite, the 19-year-old Martin sparred with IBF world superflyweight kingpin Jerwin Ancajas.
Martin traded leathers with Ancajas for only the first four rounds of his 10-round gig, but those were 12 minutes the Ifugao kid deemed as crucial in his aim to reach his full potentials.
“Finally I am able to face a world champion and while I thought I did well against Kuya Jerwin, it also served as some sort of a reminder on my part that I still need to work on a lot of things,” said Martin who completed his 10-round sparring by squaring off with two other pugs.
Martin is slowly creating awareness mainly because of his supposed menacing record of 11-0, 10 ending via knockout, but the Lagawe-born boxer assures he is very much aware about what he can offer at this point of his young career.
“I’m still young and I still need more time in the gym, more sparring sessions like this and more quality fights. I’m willing to go through the process because I am not in a hurry,” admits Martin.
Meantime, Ancajas said he is impressed with how the southpaw Martin moves and believes the Ifugao boxer has the makings of being a world beater soon.
“He’s got power and speed and being a southpaw, he actually moves like sir Manny (Pacquiao) with the way he moves in and moves out,” said Ancajas.
Martin, who is currently the WBA Asia 118lb champion, will make his Manila ring debut when he battles Petchchorhae Kokietgym of Thailand on February 16 at the Skydome inside the SM North in Quezon City.
