No comparison

WHILE some find it only too easy to acquiesce to comparison with the country’s one and only Superstar, Nora Aunor, there are those humble enough – despite their own acting achievements –to decline even a mere hint pertaining to the same.
Sylvia Sanchez just recently snatched from Aunor the title role in Ronald Carballo’s passion project “Jesusa.” With many pointing to this as testament to her already being at par with Aunor, the veteran actress pleaded, “Please, ‘wag niyong gawin na i-compare ako kay Ate Guy.”
Ate Guy is Ate Guy, no comparison.”
The 47-year-old further maintained, “Irespeto natin ang (titulong) Superstar dahil pinaghirapan ni Ate Guy ‘yan.”
“Jesusa,” set for a summer release, is a drama that centers on a woman seemingly driven to the point of no return having to contend with a multitude of disappointments in her life.
This early, many deem it a missed opportunity for Aunor, noting how it could have been another award-winning effort for her.
But why and how did it escape from Aunor’s clutches? And how did Sanchez land the opportunity?
Carballo had a ready explanation.
Carballo admitted his first choice to play “Jesusa” was Aunor. He even went as far to reveal he wrote the piece thinking of the awarded actress.
So malungkot man kailangan namin siyang palitan,” he said.
The writer-director confessed he initially felt bad about what happened but all is now water under the bridge for him.
Sanchez made clear she didn’t agree to play the role to eclipse Aunor.
Nora is Nora Aunor. Walang makakapantay. Walang makakapalit.”
