Join in Chinese community festivities for this year’s Lunar Festival

It’s time to celebrate Chinese New Year 2019. The celebration, also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar Festival, lasts between seven to 15 days, starting this year on February 5, and you can find community celebrations in most Canadian communities during that time.

On Saturday, February 9, at 2 p.m. Langley residents can celebrate at the Muriel Arnason Library, in Langley, B.C., which is celebrating its 11th annual Chinese New Year, with Chinese dance and music, displays, make a craft and a lucky envelope, and taste some New Year’s foods.

Other Chinese New Year community events in Vancouver and Richmond can be found here. Bigger crowds will descend on larger parades and festivals often held in the area’s Chinatown, like Vancouver Chinatown Spring Festival Parade on Sunday, February 10 at 11 a.m. in Chinatown.  Or the Toronto Chinatown Chinese New Year celebration, February 9-10, at Dragon City Mall and Chinatown Centre.

Year of the Pig

2019 is the Year of the Pig in Chinese New Year lore. The Pig is the 12th of all zodiac animals. The Pig is associated with the Earthly Branch and the hours 9–11 in the night. In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth.

People born in a Year of the Pig  — 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995 or 2007 — are said to be realistic and not wasteful, but let themselves enjoy life. They love entertainment, but will work hard to treat themselves. They are energetic and enthusiastic.
