Davao Del Norte: Twenty gold medals are at stake in the dancesports competition as the 2019 Batang Pinoy Mindanao Leg goes full blast today at the Davao Del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex here in Tagum City.
There will be two categories in the dancesports competition.
The standard category composed of five events — Juvenile D (W,T) Juvenile C (W,T,Q) Juvenile A (W,T,VW,F,Q), Junior C (W,T,Q) and Junior A (W,T,VW,F,Q) — and Latin with events in Juvenile D (S,C), Juvenile C (S,C,J), Juvenile A (S,C,R,PD,J), Junior C (C,R,J) at Junior A (S,C,R,PD,J).
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William Ramirez, meanwhile, said the true essence of the Batang Pinoy multi-sporting tournament for athletes below 15-year-old is to promote peace and unity among the Filipinos.
“If children can play together without the biases of who they are, then achieving peace is very possible,” Ramirez told reporters during Sunday’s news conference prior to the opening ceremony at the Davao Del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex.
A total of 3,553 athletes are registered to join the competition, which offers 20 sporting events. A total of 729 gold medals, 729 silver medals and 1,063 bronze medals are at stake with the winners qualifying for the national finals in October.
The national finals will be held either in Tagbilaran City in Bohol or Ormoc City in Leyte.
“Peacemaking is vital to our country,” he added. “This is not about championship or gold medals; this is about our children and how they can embrace unity, peace and tolerance without any bias.”
Ramirez was joined by Davao del Norte Governor Anthony del Rosario, Batang Pinoy National Secretariat head Teresito Fortaleza Jr. and Provincial Government Department Chief and Youth Sports Development head Giovanni Gulanes.
The provincial government also assured the security and safety of all the participants.
“The PNP (Philippine National Police) and AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) are already in heightened alert. Everything is under control as far as security is concerned,” said Gulanes.
