The celebration of the Chinese New Year Tuesday in Binondo, Manila is expected to draw about a million participants, police said Sunday.

Tighter security measures will be implemented during the event to ensure that there will be no untoward incidents.

Supt. Antonietto Eric Mendoza, commander of the Manila Police District Station 3 (Sta. Cruz), said around 100 police officers will be deployed to secure the activities, including the countdown, at the Lucky Chinatown Mall on Chinese New Year’s Eve on Feb. 4 from 2 p.m. onwards.

At least 200 lawmen will be assigned at the grand parade on Feb. 5.

“We will not discount the events that happened in the past week such as the bombings in Jolo, Sulu and in Zamboanga City so we are conducting extra security measures,” Mendoza said.

The procession, which will last up to three hours, will traverse the Jaboneros St., Plaza Ruiz, Ongpin St., and Reina Regente St.

No roads will be closed during the occasion.

Mendoza  asked the public to refrain from bringing backpacks and colored canisters to avoid hassle during inspections. (Ria Fernandez)
