French ‘Spider-Man’ released on bail after spending night at Makati detention cell

MANILA, Philippines — French urban free climber Alain Robert, who was earlier arrested for scaling a 47-storey tower in Makati City without permit, was released by the police after posting bail on Wednesday.
Robert posted bail amounting to P3,000 after spending the night at the detention cell of the Makati City Police Station.
He was earlier charged with alarm and scandal and other forms of trespass for climbing the 712.93-foot GT International Tower on Ayala Avenue on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Robert’s legal counsel, lawyer Howard Calleja, told INQUIRER.net that he received the release order from the Makati court late Wednesday.
However, he will still attend an arraignment and pre-trial on Feb. 1 as ordered by Judge Ma. Concepcion Billones of the Makati City Regional Trial Court Branch 62.
“Bail is only a temporary liberty, pero may kaso kami na alarm and scandal so kailangan dinggin yun ng korte (but we have a case for alarm and scandal so the court needs to hear that),” Calleja said.
Police earlier said that Robert will be charged for causing alarm and scandal, and for other forms of trespassing.
However, the latter case has not been filed yet and is still up for further investigation, Calleja added.
When asked about the condition of the 56-year-old French climber, his legal counsel said he is “okay.”
“Sabi nga niya, hindi naman siya, kumbaga yung treatment ng Makati police is very professional so okay naman. Saka nagpapasalamat kami sa how he was treated naman. Kumbaga patas lang,” Calleja said.

He added that Robert’s foreigner friends have also visited him at the police station while the climber’s legal team brought him food and clothes as they are not allowed to stay at the station for too long.
Robert, who holds the Guinness World record for most buildings climbed, have scaled tall buildings in over 70 countries worldwide such as the Taipei 101, the Petronas Towers in Malaysia, the Empire State Building in New York and Burj Khalifa in Dubai. /ee
