A police officer was killed in an ambush in Tanauan City, Batangas Friday.

Police identified the victim as PO3 John Melver Leyco.

An initial police report reaching Camp Crame in Quezon City said Leyco, who was assigned to the Sto. Tomas, Batangas municipal police station, was inside a black Toyota Corolla (license plates TTS-759) in Barangay Poblacion 4 around 5:20 p.m. when a motorcycle-riding man arrived and opened fire at him.

Investigators said Leyco sustained a fatal bullet wound in the head.

Leyco was taken to the CP Reyes Hospital in Tanauan City where he was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect fled towards Barangay Pagaspas in Tanauan, bringing with him the gun used in the killing.

Probers have started collecting physical evidence, including asking for closed circuit television footages from the nearby establishments, to identify the suspect.

The motive behind the killing is yet to be determined.

Leyco is the third policeman killed by unknown motorcycle-riding suspects since Friday, according to the Philippine National Police.

Around 4:45 p.m. Friday, PO1 Crispin Cartagenas Jr., assigned to the Quezon City Police District, was on his way home from work when two motorcycle-riding suspects ambushed him on Kamias Road, Quezon City.

SPO4 Oscar Exaltado, deputy chief of the Bacolod City police office Station 6, was about to report for duty around 8 a.m. Saturday when two motorcycle-riding suspects also shot and killed him. (Martin A. Sadongdong)
