Police round up 19,000 offenders in Quezon City following 12-day anti-criminality operations

THE Quezon City Police District (QCPD) rounded up 19,209 offenders during a 12-day Simultaneous Anti-Criminality and Law Enforcement Operation (SACLEO) implemented in preparation for the upcoming midterm elections.

QCPD Director Joselito Esquivel Jr. said that a total of 25 individuals were arrested in 418 Commission on Election (Comelec) checkpoints, resulting in the confiscation of 24 short, 4 long firearms, 272 assorted ammunition, 11 bladed weapons and 2 hand grenades.

The SACLEO from January 13 to 24 also resulted in the arrest of 313 drug personalities in 145 anti-drug operations. A total of 1,643.51 grams of shabu worth P11.1 in street value and 2,147.15 grams of dried marijuana leaves worth P257,658 in street value were seized during the operations.

About 107 Wanted Persons were also arrested. Another 128 were arrested for illegal gambling and 18,636 for violating city ordinances in connection with jaywalking, drinking intoxicating alcohol, smoking and roaming half-naked in public places.

Meanwhile, 240 motor vehicles were impounded for various traffic violations.

The QCPD also conducted a continuing “Oplan Katok” or door-to-door visit by police officers to registered addresses of firearm holders who have not renewed their license and registration. This resulted in the recall of 155 firearms (137 short and 18 long) and 217 ammunition for safekeeping.

National Capital Region Director Guillermo Eleazar inspected the arrested personalities and seized illegal drugs, firearms and vehicles. He commended the QCPD’s efforts and reported that criminality has decreased by 54 percent during the first 30 months of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration.

Eleazar said that a SACLEO was held regularly for impact and focus on efforts to get rid of criminals on the streets. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
