WEEKS before the official start of the campaign period, President Rodrigo Duterte urged Filipinos to pity the nation and elect the right candidates as he heaped praise on his former Cabinet members, who are eyeing a run for the Senate.
In his speech during the Tricycle Operators and Drivers’ Association Summit in Pasay City on Wednesday night, Duterte renewed his appeal to Filipino voters to put the country in mind when casting their votes in May.
“Pagdating sa gobyerno mamili naman kayo ng tao na dapat sa gobyerno. . Maawa naman kayo sa bayan ninyo (When it comes to government, choose those who are suited for the government. Have pity on your country),” Duterte said.
“Medyo gamitan lang ninyo nang konting Mathematics para hindi makawawa ang (Use a little mathematics so it would not be pitiful)… At least ‘pag boto na be able to explain ano, bakit ito ang stand niya ganun, ito ang mangyari, ito ang hindi mangyari (when election comes they will be able to explain their stand, this is what will happen, this is what won’t happen). Try to figure out something that is good for the country,” he said.
The President then described his former top aide and now senatorial aspirant Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go as a “good and honest” man.
“If you want an honest at saka masa (and pro-poor)…. Hindi ito si Bong medyo anak ng mayaman pero nasanay ‘to sa akin. Marunong ito mag-diskarte ng kapwa tao niya. Kasi natuto sa akin eh. Masa talaga ‘yan,” Duterte said of Go.
He also praised Francis Tolentino, who was his political adviser, as a very kind politician.
Later on, Duterte also mentioned in his speech former Philippine National Police chief Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, who led the war on drugs in the early part of his administration.
The President then reiterated that he would vote for singer Freddie Aguilar because he wrote songs with a message.
“He is the only singer na nakita ko na may mensahe ang kanta niya. Lahat ng kanta niya (He is the only singer I know who conveys a message in all of his songs). He’s trying to convey a message to the country,” Duterte said.
Duterte said that he has a list of candidates whom he would support in the elections in May becauae they, too, supported him along the way.
