THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has revealed that it was monitoring the reported data breach on pawnshop and remittance firm Cebuana Lhuillier (CL).
In a statement, the central bank said it was informed of the data breach, which affected personal information of about 900,000 clients of Cebuana.
“The BSP is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the concerned officers of CL to ensure timely remediation and that such exposed information will not be used for fraudulent transactions,” it said.
Last week, Cebuana Lhuillier told its clients that its e-mail server used for marketing purposes was hit by the breach, compromising customer’s personal information such as names, birthdays, e-mail addresses and mobile numbers.
Following the disclosure, the National Privacy Commission said it has now an ongoing investigation into the incident, which was covered by the Bangko Sentral’s enhanced rules on information security management of its supervised financial institutions like pawnshops and remittance firms.
Under stricter rules, BSP supervised financial institutions (BSFIs) are required to report major cyber-related incidents and disruptions of financial services and operations within two hours from discovery of the incident. MAYVELIN U. CARABALLO
