SIGNAL 1 is up over parts of Visayas and Mindanao as Tropical Depression “Amang” is expected to make landfall in Surigao this Sunday night, the state weather bureau said earlier in the day.

The affected areas are Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Eastern Bohol and Northern Cebu, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands and Camiguin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

Classes are suspended on Monday in Albay Province – all levels for both public and private schools; Camarines Sur Province – all levels in private and public schools; Naga City – preschool and elementary in all public and private schools.

The eye of “Amang” was spotted 235 kilometers east-southeast of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte as of 1 p.m., and was moving at 30 km per hour (kph) with maximum winds of up to 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 60 kph.

Pagasa said that “Amang” may start to weaken into a low pressure area (LPA) after making landfall and while traversing the Caraga region.

However, moderate to heavy rains may prevail over Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Negros Provinces, Northern Cebu, and Bohol.

Moderate to heavy rains are expected on Monday in the Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region and Dinagat Islands.

Moderate to heavy rains are expected on Tuesday in Eastern Visayas and Bicol Region.

Although “Amang” is expected to have weakened by Monday, Pagasa still advised residents, especially in areas with high risks of flooding and landslide, to remain vigilant and take appropriate actions when necessary.

Fisherfolk and small seacraft are also advised not to venture out into sea in areas under Signal 1, the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon, and the eastern seaboards of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao because of “Amang” and the surge of the northeast monsoon. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
