ONE of two suspects in the Cotabato City bombing surrendered over the weekend, according to police on Tuesday.

Salipodin Pasandalan, 56, was accompanied by relatives and two lawyers to police on Sunday night, according to Chief Supt. Eliseo Rasco.

Rasco said Pasandalan surrendered after he saw his picture on television as one of the two suspects in the bombing incident in front of South Seas Mall on New Year’s Eve.

“He saw his picture on TV and he and his relatives got scared so they surrendered him. He is assisted by two lawyers for now so he will not speak further,” Rasco said in a mix of English and Tagalog.

Pasandalan denied his involvement in the crime and told police that he was just a frequent visitor at the mall.

Rasco said, however, that CCTV footage showed Pasandalan covering the younger suspect who was placing an improvised explosive device (IED) in front of the mall.

“[They were] both together at the parking lot and when they entered the mall. They were also together in the comfort room where we saw the IED bomb…He was also covering the other suspect while they were putting the other IED near the lotto [outlet],” he said.

He ordered the Special Investigation Task Group commander to file a case against Pasandalan.

Rasco said police were determining other motives like terrorism, extortion, and politics.

Two civilians were killed from the bombing incident while 34 others were injured. ROY NARRA
