THE Manila police announced
alternate routes for motorists from Monday to Wednesday to pave the way for a “peaceful” celebration of the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

In an advisory, the Manila District Traffic Enforcement Unit (MDTEU) announced the closure of the southbound lane of Quezon Blvd., from A. Mendoza/Fugoso to Plaza Miranda and the westbound lane of España Boulevard from P. Campa to Lerma Street on Monday from 11 a.m. onwards for the procession
and blessing of the replicas of the revered statue of blackened Jesus
Christ, kneeling and carrying a cross.

All vehicles coming from España going to Roxas Blvd., South Pier Zone or Taft Ave. should turn right to P. Campa, go straight to Fugoso St., to the point of destination.

All vehicles going to Quezon Blvd. coming from A. Mendoza St. shall
turn right to Fugoso, left to Rizal Ave. then to point of destination.

The MDTEU said that some streets would be passable “once the tail end of the procession passes.”

More roads will be closed on Tuesday because of the “Pahalik” or kissing of the feet of the Black Nazarene, a centuries-old Catholic tradition preceding the “Traslacion,” held every January 9.

These are:

-Katigbak Drive and South Drive
-Northbound lane of Quezon and McArthur Bridge from Bonifacio Shrine onward
-Taft Avenue from Ayala Boulevard to Bonifacio Shrine

The MDTEU advised light vehicles going to Bonifacio Drive and Roxas Blvd southbound to turn around at Anda Circle going to A. Soriano Ave., turn right to Gen. Luna St. to Burgos-Orosa St., then turn left to TM Kalaw St. to Taft Avenue to the point of destination.

Meanwhile, trucks and other heavy vehicles going to Bonifacio Drive
Southbound shall turn around Anda Circle going back to Northbound lane of Road 10 to C3 to the point of destination.

Vehicles coming from the southern part of Manila intending to use the
northbound lane of Roxas Blvd. from TM Kalaw St. to P. Burgos St. shall turn right to TM Kalaw St. left to Orosa St. going to Intramuros left to A. Soriano Ave. to point of destination.

Vehicles utilizing P. Burgos St shall turn right to Finance Road to Ayala Avenue to the point of destination.

Vehicles using Taft Avenue northbound shall turn right to Ayala Blvd to point of destination.

The following roads are closed on the day of the Black Nazarene celebration, the “Traslacion” beginning at 12 a.m.,
which is the start of the fiesta mass:

-Stretch of Mc Arthur, Jones and Quezon Bridge
-Roxas Boulevard from Katigbak Drive to TM Kalaw St.
-Both lanes of Quezon Blvd. (Quiapo) will be closed to traffic, from A. Mendoza or Fugoso St. and España Ave  or P. Campa St. for southbound and from Taft Avenue/Ayala Blvd for northbound.

Motorists are urged to take the following alternate routes:

If coming from Quezon City, use the stretch of España Avenue, then turn right to P. Campa St., make a left turn to A. Mendoza St., then turn right to Fugoso St., make another right to CM Recto Avenue or left to Nicanor Reyes St., turn right to CM Recto Avenue to the point
of destination.

If coming from Legarda St., motorists shall turn right to CM Recto Avenue or turn left to Mendiola St. to point of destination.

If coming from Caloocan City using the Rizal Avenue, make a right turn to Fugoso St. or CM Recto Avenue, to the point of destination.

If using heavy vehicles such as cargo trucks, drivers shall take Pres. Osmeña, then Pres. Quirino Avenue, Nagtahan via AH Lacson Avenue to Capulong St.

Drivers of light vehicles intending to use the stretch of Bonifacio Drive and Roxas Blvd southbound shall turn around at Anda Circle going to Delpan or Moriones to the point of destination.

If coming from Reina Regente St. using the southbound lane, turn right to San Fernando St. or make a u-turn at Plaza Ruiz to the point of destination.

All bus drivers using Taft Avenue northbound shall turn right to Ayala
Ave to point of destination.

This year’s route of the Traslacion is the same as last year’s. The expected five million devotees will walk 6.1 kilometers from the Quirino Grandstand to the Quiapo Church.

Don’ts during Traslacion

The zero vendor policy will be implemented along the processional
routes starting on Monday at 12 a.m., as recommended by the Manila
government.

MPD Director Vicente Danao Jr. said firearms, deadly weapons, and
firecrackers would be banned in the city effective 5 a.m. on Tuesday,
January 8.

Backpacks, colored canisters and water jugs and liquor are also prohibited at the Quirino Grandstand.

Areas where the procession will pass are “no fly, no sail zones.”

Telecommunications signals in these zones will be cut to ensure security. CATHERINE A. MODESTO
