ILOILO CITY—A woman, who had claimed that the signature campaign against a power company was forged, was shot dead on Friday.
Mercedes “Ging-ging” Nava, 65, was driving a Mitsubishi Strada at Barangay Calajunan here when a motorcycle-riding gunman repeatedly fired at the driver’s side.
Nava’s companion inside the vehicle, Erwin Fontillas, 41, was also killed while two others were unhurt.
Nava recently became controversial when she publicly claimed that a signature campaign against the Panay Electric Company, the city’s power distributor, was forged.
Nava was also involved in several cases pending before courts, said Senior Insp. Marlon Valencia, chief of the Mandurriao District police station.
He said the police had yet to determine the motive in the killing although initial investigation showed that Nava was the target of the gunman who fled on board a motorcycle driven by an accomplice.
Nava was backing up the vehicle along a road at Barangay Calajunan when the two men flagged them down before the gunman approached the driver’s seat and repeatedly fired.
Valencia said the assailants fled towards Arevalo District.
