THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) announced the list of local names it will be giving tropical cyclones that would be entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in 2019.
Pagasa prepared four sets of local names, which will be used again in a cycle of four years. The 2019 list was last used in 2015.
New names will be used this year after some of the old ones were decommissioned in 2015 due to the intensity of the typhoons. Names are delisted and changed if a typhoon has caused over 300 deaths or has brought over P1 billion of agriculture and infrastructure damages.
“Lando,” (international name “Koppu”) has been replaced with “Liwayway” while “Nona” (with international name “Melor”) has been replaced with Nimfa after their devastation exceeded the billion-peso damage to agriculture and infrastructure in October and December 2015, respectively.
The local typhoon names for 2019 are:
- Amang
- Betty
- Chedeng
- Dodong
- Egay
- Falcon
- Goring
- Hanna
- Ineng
- Jenny
- Kabayan
- Liwayway
- Marilyn
- Nimfa
- Onyok
- Perla
- Quiel
- Ramon
- Sarah
- Tisoy
- Ursula
- Viring
- Weng
- Yoyoy
- Zigzag
The list above should be enough for an average of 20 typhoons that usually enter PAR, Pagasa said.
If the number of typhoons exceeds 25, Pagasa has prepared an auxiliary list:
- Abe
- Berto
- Charo
- Dado
- Estoy
- Felion
- Gening
- Herman
- Irma
- Jaime
