Cybercriminals will target the booming digital economy next year, a cybersecurity firm warned.
In its financial cyberthreats forecast for 2019, Kaspersky Lab said new cybercriminal networks were expected to emerge in the Indo-Pakistan region, Southeast Asia, and Central Europe.
“The activity of cybercriminals in these regions is constantly growing: the immaturity of protective solutions in the financial sector and the rapid spread of various electronic means of payment among the population and companies in these regions are contributing to this,” it said.
Kaspersky also said cybercriminals would move towards online payment platforms.
In the Philippine scene alone, a number of data breaches had been recorded in 2018, involving online shopping sites of fast-food chains and a broadcast giant.
Wendy’s Philippines in May informed the public about the hacking activity, with over 82,000 records of personal information of its job applicants and customers exposed. Homegrown fast-food giant Jollibee, meanwhile, was mandated by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) to temporarily suspend its delivery website given “serious vulnerabilities” in the platform, serving as a threat to around 18 million individuals on Jollibee’s database.
The latest company who suffered from online crime was ABS-CBN. The media firm decided to temporarily take down its online shopping sites University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and ABS-CBN Store, with fears that data of its 213 customers were compromised.
Stephan Neumeier, managing director at Kaspersky Lab Asia Pacific, told The Manila Times in September the country was “very vulnerable” given its young population, or the millennial market, that is “easier to attack.”
Digital payment provider PayPal said in its report last June Filipino shoppers would spend P185 billion by 2020, an double growth from last year’s P92.5 billion.
